Historical note: The Naval Air Station at Moffett Field was built in 1932 as home base for ZRS-5 better known as the Macon. The massive 785 foot long airship was designed for long-range reconnaissance and carried five small airplanes that could be launched from, and retrieved by, the airship while in flight.
Built by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Co in Akron Ohio, the Macon arrived at its new home in October 1933. The
Macon crashed off the coast of Monterey California in February 1935
during a storm and was lost with one fatality. The crash marked the end
of the airship era for the US Navy.
In 1994, Moffett Field was closed as a military base and later re-opened as NASA Research Park, managed by NASA.
